Meet the Staff Monday: Volunteer Auxiliary Board

The staff at Morristown-Hamblen Healthcare System strive to always put patients first as well as provide an excellent experience for everyone. An incredible asset to making that mission a reality for the hospital are the many volunteers that want to give back and help those in need.  For our Meet the Staff Monday, we would like to share some details about our volunteer program and introduce you to the Volunteer Auxiliary Board for 2019-2021.

There are over 50 active volunteers at MHHS. These volunteers provide more than 13,000 hours of service per year to the hospital. Since the volunteer program’s inception in 1956, more than 400,000 hours have been given by the generous volunteers of our community. In May, new members were elected into the MHHS Volunteer Auxiliary Board. Volunteers are selected by their peers to serve on the board for two year periods. Board members lead fundraising events throughout the year and ultimately make the decision where the money raised should be allocated within the hospital. Recent projects include the renovation of the hospital’s lobby, renovation of the hospital’s chapel, purchase of Stratus  video interpreters, and donations. The Board also provides two scholarship opportunities to area high school students entering  into a healthcare field. Applications are reviewed based upon GPA requirements and the individual’s contributions to their community.

The 2019-2021 Volunteer Auxiliary Board members include Debra Rogers, President; Brenda Cole, Vice-President; Linda Schultz, Secretary; Florence Stubblefield, Treasurer and Debbie Widener, Corresponding Secretary. Collectively, these board members have served MHHS as volunteers for over 40 years – Stubblefield serving for 26 years alone.

Sharon Hayes, Senior Volunteer Coordinator and Gift Shop Manager, said “Our volunteers are not only important to us because of the time and talents they give to our hospital, but they are even more special because of the love and compassion they show to our patients and their families.”

Volunteer positions are currently available at MHHS with a variety of shift options and opportunities. Volunteers are commonly needed to assist in the Front Lobby, Day Surgery Waiting Room, Cancer Center, Emergency Room, Admissions/Registration, CCU Waiting Room, and more. Volunteers also staff the JBC Gift Shop inside the hospital and revenues from the gift shop are used to improve patient care in the hospital.
