National Laboratory Professionals Week – April 22-28, 2018

Posted on April 17, 2018

Medical Laboratory Professionals Week is an annual celebration of medical laboratory professionals and pathologists who play a vital role in health care and patient advocacy.

Morristown-Hamblen has a highly skilled team of 43 Licensed Medical Laboratory Professionals, including 20 medical lab scientists, 16 lab assistants, 2 pathologists, 2 histo techs, and 3 lab/path office assistants.MHHS lab staff

Last year, our lab performed 352,609 lab tests, 66,148 comprehensive chemistry panels, 62,561 complete blood counts, 24,559 cultures, 18,042 urinalysis, and 2,778 flu tests.

The lab staff routinely perform maintenance, calibrations, quality control and proficiency testing on all of our analyzers to maintain high quality standards. They monitor turnaround times for lab tests to assure results are provided to physicians in a timely manner to ensure efficient patient care. They are also nationally accredited by the College of American pathologists (CAP) and American Association of Blood Banks. CAP is an accrediting agency recognized by JCAHO and serves patients, pathologists, and the public by fostering and advocating best practices in pathology and laboratory medicine.

All the labs in the Covenant Health system work together to get accurate test results as fast as possible. There are hundreds of kinds of tests available to doctors that can be performed within the Covenant system, and we are constantly striving to add more.

For example:Lab Week 2018
• Fort Sanders Regional’s laboratory performs Hepatitis testing for several of our hospitals
• Testosterone is performed at Fort Loudoun’s laboratory
• Most of the PCR testing is performed at Parkwest. This means fewer specimens have to be sent to out-of-state labs, and doctors get results days sooner.

Join us in celebrating our medical laboratory professionals during National Lab Week from April 22-28, 2018.
