Meet Debbie Widener, a perseverant volunteer being honored as volunteer of the month for September. Debbie has been volunteering over seven years. Learn more about her below.
What area(s) do you volunteer? JBC Gift Shop and the Volunteer Auxiliary Board
Why did you choose to volunteer at Morristown-Hamblen? Because of the influence of my mother working 25 years here at the grill which used to be in the gift shop. Carolyn Robbins also asked me to volunteer.
Where are you from? Born in Maryland and I moved to this area at 12 years old.
What is a random fact or talent about yourself? I enjoy doing needlepoint and cross stitching.
What is your favorite food? Steak and crab cakes
If you could have dinner with anyone, alive or dead, who would it be and why? My parents and grandmother on my father’s side.
What is your favorite TV show or movie? Dirty Dancing
What is your greatest accomplishment? Working at Kmart for 34 years and taking care of my mother for 7 years.
Would you choose a free trip or money? If I chose a trip, I would take my husband to see New York Yankees and if I chose money, I would want to use it to see New York together.
What is your favorite childhood memory? When our family would go to the Potomac River, such a beautiful place to be while we ate together. One time, we heard a splash and saw a boy who fell in. My dad got up and jumped in to save him. The boy was caught on the tree roots and that river is also known for water moccasins. To this day, we still receive Christmas cards from that boy who my dad saved.
